Promoting Accessible DIstance LEarning

for people with intellectual disabilities

During the pandemic, people with intellectual disabilities (PDI) suffered due to social distancing rules, while limited access to digital tools, distance learning, and poor access to information related to COVID-19 led to a deterioration in their quality of life. Furthermore, the health emergency highlighted several gaps in the social, political, and geographical knowledge of PDIs that can hinder their understanding of their surroundings, endanger their health, their autonomy, and hinder the exercise of their rights as European citizens.

The general objective of the ADILE project is to promote the empowerment and social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities (PID), by promoting the accessibility of digital tools for distance learning. ADILE also aims to contribute to the removal of barriers and social obstacles, through learning activities aimed at promoting civic education with an inclusive approach for PID.

The main results of the project are:
●R1 > ADILE Toolkit: ADILE will develop an online training course dedicated to PID with the aim of improving their understanding of the world around them and increasing their autonomy.
● R2 > ADILE Educational Platform: The platform constitutes the central hub of the project, through which the accessible distance education model proposed by ADILE will be tested.
● R3 > ADILE Guidelines for the establishment of a European model for accessible distance learning for people with intellectual disabilities.

The Adile training toolkit

How to use the toolkit

The toolkit consists of 12 modules, which can be taken either individually or as a complete training package. It is divided into 4 areas:

Area 1: digital skills

Area 2: understanding

Area 3: social and civic competence

Area 4: cultural awareness and expression

The Adile Training Toolkit was created with the aim and purpose of supporting students' learning during their lessons and module study.
The toolkit is the result of outcomes achieved in the partner countries Spain, Italy, Poland, Ireland, and Belgium.

The national Pilot Actions to test the ADILE educational platform

In Ireland

In Italy

In May, in Ireland, the ADILE platform was tested.
Tested by 11 students from whom we received positive feedback.

In the month of April, the project was evaluated in Catania by 25 participants.
The users extensively tested the 4 modules, strengthening their skills and acquiring new ones through the exercises. The participants were satisfied both with the results and with the platform!

In Spain

In Poland

In April, the first test of the ADILE platform took place at the Padre Zurita Center in Alcorcón, Spain.
The students encountered some minor difficulties, but they managed
to independently complete the course modules and exercises!

At the Fratel Alberto foundation in Radwanowice, 10 people with ID tested the platform with great enthusiasm and active participation.

Transnational results

The participants involved in the pilot action (educators and students with intellectual disabilities) provided positive feedback regarding the ADILE platform and the pilot action. For all the countries involved, the platform was a fundamental starting point for future progress in the accessibility of distance learning.

The analysis of the national pilot actions highlighted the main challenges that students with intellectual disabilities faced when using the ADILE platform:

  • Lack of familiarity and knowledge of technology and digital tools.
  • Inaccessibility of language and vocabulary.
  • Lack of non-textual content, such as audio and video.

The main challenges encountered by educators include:

  • Lack of familiarity and knowledge of technology and digital tools.
  • The absence of quality educational resources and materials written in simplified and easily understandable language.
  • The number of educators is insufficient to provide quality individual support to students.

In general, the pilot survey identified the following areas for improvement most frequently mentioned in participant feedback:

  • Develop a wide range of resources and teaching materials in easy-to-read language.
  • Diversify exercises, questions, and modes of interactivity on the platform to consolidate learning.
  • Provide basic ICT training for students and educators.
  • Increase funding for personal devices (e.g., laptops and tablets) and for a stable internet connection for people with intellectual disabilities.

The opportunities and potential of the ADILE platform have been recognized in all countries, with feedback from participants who believed it could help elevate and advance the platform and distance learning.

ADILE is an Erasmus+ project coordinated by Cooperativa Sociale Controvento in partnership with Base3, Predif, I&F Instruction and Formation, EASPD Brussels and SEDA.
